Fall Candy Apples

October 30, 2013

Okay....Can I get a collective Yummmmmm

And even if you are not a big fan of Candy Apples, you have to admit.....they sure do look good and they are so easy to make.

I think the best part about making candy apples is how creative you can be with the toppings.  From sprinkles to nuts to gold sugar dust.....anything looks good on an apple. And they are partly........almost ........kinda healthy too!

Candy Coated Apples
Medium size apples - red delicious, McIntosh, Jonathans etc
Apple Sticks - 5.75 in size
1 package of Candy Melts- White or Orange ( I buy mine in the baking isle at the Craft Store)
Candy Melt or Microwave
Wax paper
Assortment of toppings- sprinkles, nut, chips, colored sugar

Instructions~
Step 1- After washing and drying your apples take your apple stick and insert into the stem side of the apple. Apples should be at room temperature.
Step 2-Melt your candy melts.
Step 3-Dip apples  into your candy mixture, spinning around and tapping excess candy off the apple.
Step 4- Place apples on wax paper.
Step 5- After about 30 seconds but no more then 1 minute sprinkle your desired toppings on to your apples.
Step 6- Let set for at least 30 mins before enjoying your Candy Apples

Okay, one more time......Yummmmmmm.
Do you have a favorite fall treat?

Grateful for~
Healthy and not so healthly apples

I love the man....and my kitchen table!

October 28, 2013

I am such a lucky gal in more ways then one. Not only do I have a great husband, but I also have a great kitchen table that has recently made it's way from my husbands office back down to the breakfast area.

See this table is very symbolic to our love and our relationship.

I will never forget that Fall night exactly 15 years ago today, I went to his house for dinner.  He had set this table with beautiful flowers, wine and mismatched plates. We had lobster by candlelight. Music in the background. It was perfect.

After we were finished with our dinner he got up and said "come under the table, there's something I want to show you". I am thinking to myself  WHAT....... this guy is cute but I had never heard that cheesy one-liner before.

And there it was. Those three little words, carved in the leg of that beautiful table. With my heart beating fast, totally speechless and completely caught off guard, I say " oh no, you have ruined your beautiful table" to which he quickly responds "it's not ruined, we will have this table forever".

It was at that very moment underneath that table, that I knew I loved this man......and that he and his table were a keeper .

I'm thinking that any man that's a great cook and carves that he loves you into the leg of a beautiful wood table has got to be the one.... even with his cheesy one-liner!

Grateful~
That it worked out!

4 Simple Tips to Care for your Orchids

October 23, 2013

The Orchid. A beautiful and exquisite flower. Some plants look to perfect to be real. And contrary to what most people think, this perfect looking plant is not very difficult to maintain. In fact some orchids are quite easy to grow and require little maintenance........ The only problem may be figuring out which of the approximately 25,000 species would be best for you. Yes, 25,000.

When I got my first Orchid plant years ago, a friend gave me the best advice on how to care for my plant..... 4 simple tips that I am sharing with you today.

Tip 1- Orchids need good bright, indirect lighting.

Tip 2- Don't over water your orchid. Water once a week in the winter and twice a week in the summer. In fact, if Orchids could talk they would tell you that they prefer the humidity over watering.

Tip 3- Once your orchid stops flowering, cut the flower stalk down. While your orchid is resting, continue to water and provide it plenty of light.

Tip 4- Be patient......... it will flower again.
Just, wait and you'll see.

Have you ever grown Orchids? Success or failure?

Grateful for~
A green thumb

Customized Lamps

October 21, 2013

Today I wanted to tell you about something that's happened in my bedroom after 12 years.

Oh come on....nothing like that. Top This Top That is after all, a blog appropriate for the whole family.

I got new lamps. Aren't they pretty. Yup, after 12 years with the same lamps, with a few spray paint jobs and shade changes in between.....it was time.

I am like a giddy school girl who just got asked to the 8th grade dance by the cutest boy in the class. Except this time, I am not in 8th grade and it's not a boy....it's my new lamps from LampsPlus.com. And they are not just any lamps, they are totally customized by yours truly.

See I was talking to this friend one day on the phone who wouldn't stop talking about how amazing her lamps were. She went on to say that you can totally customize the base, select the lamp shade from a wide variety of patterns and styles and choose your trim colors with LampsPlus.

She was so right. Amazing....and easy to customize the perfect lamp.

So now, next time you and I talk on the phone....... be prepared.....you already know what we are going to talk about, unless you order your new customized lamp before then and we can be giddy together.
When is the last time you updated your lights in your bedroom?

Grateful~
To lampsplus.com for my new lamps that I received

DIY Dry Erase Board

October 17, 2013

Lately, I have been on a mission to create a Family Command Center to help with organizing family events and for the mounds and mounds of paperwork my children bring home from school each day.
Seriously.....lots of paper.

If you are a parent with a school aged child ( particularly the elementary years)  you totally get this and experience it daily. If your children are grown, you get it too and are probably sitting back chuckling at me, with a ' been there, done that' kind of attitude.  Go ahead and chuckle....That's quite okay.... I have a solution.

Part of my plan is to reduce clutter, while still staying on top of things and being efficient. For the record.....I dislike clutter, it makes me nutty....really nutty.

I spent about $7.50 on a pre-cut piece of dry erase board at the Home Depot and another $2.00 on 2 pieces of fence board that I created a frame with and painted. Less then $10 for organizational sanity!

Now when the kids come home from school, first thing I do is write any important reminders, dates and need to know's on the new board ....
           then recycle the paper......
that will be used again for another sweet child........
                         for another important reminder.........
                                  sometime in the distant future.

Unless we all stop the paper....and make it a  Dry Erase Board society.
How do you respond to clutter?

grateful for~

Fall Porch Tour 2013

October 15, 2013

Welcome to the 2013 Fall Front Porch Tour. I am so happy that you stopped by
Top This Top That.

It's no secret how much I love the Fall season,
the outdoors, nature and........
my front porch.

This porch ushers in more then just the beautiful colors of the season.

It's a place of comfort
  A place of celebration
 A place of calm

A place of reflection, a place where I dream.
A place to think.

A place to witness family time, playtime, the occasional date night and.....
life in the country

It's a place where we welcome you. A place where we invite you in. A place where we hope you will want to stay.

to visit, laugh and......
 talk

Talk about....how pretty the mums are, how acorns really aren't that big in the country because you bought them that way or how everything looks so "fall festive" with a coat of Pumpkin colored spray paint on it.

Or....... how this wasn't the best year for corn in the garden because we had too much rain and the critters got whatever little cobs that we did grow....but we do have an abundance of husks to use in our fall decor.

The front porch......A place that you will love.
A place that was meant just to do that.

Happy Fall!
