Guest House Updates- Part 2

June 29, 2015

So it occurred to me while sipping on some frozen fruity drinks at the beach with my mom last week while we were in Florida, that I better get this Coppertone bum in gear and finish the updates that I want to do before she gets here in 4 weeks. I really haven't done enough to share up until today, and even these might appear to be a tad bit lame, but for my mom's sake (and cause I know she is reading this), the updates will happen and be ready for her arrival.

Turn a Terra Cotta Saucer into a Cupcake Stand

May 28, 2015

Ready for this months challenge......

I wouldn't say that I am the most craftiest gal on the planet...not even close.
But I try.
And sometimes it's hard.
Cause I tend to over think.
And occasionally stress out.
Then reach for a cupcake...or two, who's counting. There small.
Then guilt sets in. sigh

Operation Project Pergola

May 27, 2015

I have been waiting for this day to finally get here after 12 years, so we can finally begin the first big project of the summer 2015. I am calling it Operation Project Pergola.  And when all is said and done, it should look like a lot like this when we are finished....less the weather vain and two sides and not attached to our home.

Actually the backyard is getting some serious love this summer with another biggie, a screened in porch. To a home that has several outdoor areas and mosquito's the size of a small dog, a screened in porch is huge.
But first things first. Pergola.

Right now after demo this weekend, the current state of the back deck looks like this.........

My Wall Of Shame....Butlers Pantry

May 8, 2015

After a while, 365 days after you started.....to be exact, things just start to blend in. They somehow become the norm in the room...if you let them.

And although you put a timeline together to get it done along with the added pressure of having parties, holidays and company......it doesn't quite get past the finished line.

Black and White Bathroom Makeover

April 7, 2015

Decorating and Design

A month or so before Christmas, I decided I didn't have enough to do in between wrapping presents, decorating the house, getting ready for out of town guests, and randomly decided to change the color of a guest bath in the house. For some odd reason, I seem to wait for the busiest times of the year and embark on projects like this, whether it needs it or not.

The guest bath across from our media room was painted red when we first moved into the house. Believe it or not, the media room and game room were also painted in the same color.  In fact, this was the red.......

Laundry Room Mini Makeover

March 16, 2015

I must admit, I am not a big fan of doing laundry. Never have , never will. Not sure when it started, and unfortunately my dislike continued even after I had the kids...imagine that.

I don't even know what part of doing laundry I like least, I think its the folding. For years it was a battle between 'stuff' that would just land on the counter that didn't belong in the laundry room, and a load of towels. Towels eventually won when I told the family that if it didn't belong in the basket, it didn't belong in the room.
You can see more details about my tile project here.

How to make an old chair new again

February 23, 2015

I sure hope my sister is not reading my blog today.... she may just change her mind.

Would you believe that this chair in my office with it's clean classic lines and modern look is 27 years old?  I only hope I am aging that gracefully. It was actually from my sisters first dining room set from Broyhill, and when she opted for something different a few years back, naturally I raised my hand to take it. The table is actually being used in my husbands office here.

Cottage Makeover on a Budget....The Plan

February 11, 2015

It's time for the cottage on Dog House Lane to get a makeover. Since my mom will be occupying the space for a few months and it really hasn't had any updates in a few years,  I thought I would freshen the place up before she gets here. I am also challenging myself to do it with money out of my piggy bank, which is probably less then $200, if I count all those nickels and pennies.

Sweetest Valentine Roundup....you will love

February 4, 2015

I think cupid is going to be a bit disappointed in me this Valentines. It seems that I am finding love in all the wrong places right now, like working on completing my 2014 project list.  Yup, I said it.....2014. So sadly..... no time for heartfelt crafts and projects overflowing with glitter and kisses.

But what I do have, are some pretty amazing friends who have come together to share some of their favorite valentine projects
as well as my favorite from last season. What can I say.....true love.

DIY Tip Of The Week...Refinishing Furniture

January 26, 2015

Wanna see what happens when you miss an important step in the painting process and forget to prime the sides of a painted piece of furniture?  A hot mess!
In all fairnessthis was the corner of the cabinet that the kids used their computers on so it got a lot of traffic and was bound to get beat up by little kid hands.... primed or not.

My Office Makeover... and the prettiest shade of blue

January 22, 2015

About 6 months ago, and somewhere in between a slew of other projects that I really needed to get done around the house, I bought a beautiful blue rug on-line during a semi annual sale....even though nothing in the house was this shade of blue. In fact, I actually bought 2 blue rugs to try in this space, loved this one for here and ended up using the other in another room, which I am currently working on.

Two months later it was time to color match  from the rug, and paint my credenza which I showed you here. The blue that I chose is a mix between a navy and royal blue and appropriately called Dignity Blue by SW. It is such a beautiful color.

Wallpapered Bookcase

January 14, 2015

When  I made a decision to not wallpaper the entire wall in my home office and only go to the existing chair rail, it created a bit of extra wallpaper so I decided to turn my boring not so exciting bookcase on the other side of the room, into something with a bit of flair and interest ....well at least my office thinks so.

And although, certainly not an expert, I have put together my own simple steps for a successful wallpaper project.

DIY Faux Wood Fireplace Screen

January 8, 2015

It's safe to say that the 20 foot floor to ceiling fireplace in our breakfast/kitchen was is the crown jewel in the room. When you walk in to the kitchen it's the first thing you notice. This was a picture from about 13 years ago when we were getting ready to move in.

Over the years we have enjoyed many wonderful fires and how it created a warm and inviting spot until a few years ago when the flue caught on fire due to accumulated soot. Sadly, it's not been used since then. You can read more about that here. With a hefty price tag to repair, we have put this on the list of "someday projects"  right behind college tuition for 3 kids and installing a pool in the backyard. In the meantime we can enjoy the heat that the wood burning fireplace in the family room gives off.

My 2014 Year in A Blog Post

January 5, 2015

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I have enjoyed the last couple of weeks, not picking up a paint brush, moving a piece of furniture and not even thinking about what the next project was going to be.
Totally appreciated......... family time and every aspect of the holiday break. Wearing my PJ's until dinner time..... without feeling guilty. Watching endless amounts of the Hallmark Channel, HGTV and Home Alone. I was so rested that I actually stayed up till midnight New Years Eve, to give my hubby a smooch.

Kicking off 2015 wouldn't feel complete without looking at some highlights from 2014, a year in which I think was pretty amazing for me, my family and the blog.

My favorite room reveals for the year

December 16, 2014

My One and Only Holiday Craft....Boxwood Star Wreaths

December 11, 2014

Yup..... This is it. The only thing that I have managed to muster up. Don't get me wrong, I had big plans and lots of ideas and before I knew it... it's two weeks before Christmas. Can someone tell me where the other part of the month went, cause I want it back.

Dresser Makeover....and how I saved $1,143

November 14, 2014

Oh, how I loved it when gas was $1.50 ( BTW last time was Nov,2008), a good Buy One Get One Sale, which I always seem to spend more then I normally would have,  clipping coupons that I remember to bring with me to the grocery store instead of the bottom of my handbag, using my Kohl's bucks before they expire and....... when I don't have to spend $1,143 on furniture.

The savings story began when we were working on Lily's bedroom makeover and my husband suggested we look for a dresser and nightstand that were bigger then what she had in her room and something that she could use for a long time. She was actually 'borrowing' the guest room dresser for the last few years and I knew that she would eventually outgrow it...she is a girl after all.

Credenza Makeover....Office Progress

November 3, 2014

Little by little, the changes in my office are coming together, but that's basically how I roll these days. Sllllooooowwww.
Gone are the days where projects were finished in a weekend. Now it's more like a few months. But hey......

Here's how the credenza looked after I got my hands on it the first time. You can hear more about that here and see how the room looked  prior to these most recent changes. The room was pretty but a little too calm for the mood that I wanted in there.

Easy Lampshade Upgrade....in about 5 mins

October 28, 2014

I am finishing up a few loose ends in my office and recently just made a quick and easy change to a plain jane lampshade.  With just a few simple steps and about 5 mins, it's easy create a custom looking lamp shade to coordinate with your space... not to mention the money that you save from creating your own.

Lily's 'Pink' Bedroom Reveal

October 26, 2014

I think this makeover that I did in Lily's bedroom, was probably the best project that I have worked on this year....so far. Sure there was the kitchen makeover here that I absolutely love, but there is just something about this room that makes me and my Lily smile....a lot.
